CHRIS BECOM :: PERCUSSIONIST email :: chris@drumlife.org
Chris Becom has been studying and performing music since he was 9 years old. Early on he focused primarily on learning western art/classical music and rock-n-roll on the piano and guitar. After starting college, however, he fell in love with drumming and hand percussion music from Africa and Latin America. Early guidance from many African and Cuban friends, musicians and teachers helped mold Chris' musical ear and technique for many African based musics.\ Chris has performed as a freelance musician since these early college days. He has also worked with the UNC-Greensboro Dance Department, a number of Latin Jazz Ensembles, a West African Drumming Ensemble based out of NYC, and the Carolina Friends School in Durham. He has been educating people from all ages on World Music since 1999. As a Middle and High School Music teacher at the Carolina Friends School, Chris began working with students privately and developing a unique approach to learning hand percussion. As a graduate student at the University of Michigan, Chris studied education, music and ethnomusicology. Having just relocated to the Triangle area after graduating, Chris is poised to take on new students and teach his unique drum program, drumLIFE ( www.drumLIFE.org ). Chris will always be a student of world music; he currently studies folkloric Afro-Cuban music with Bradley Simmons. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
